2026 National Model Aviation Day

IMG_1510.jpeg

In spite of 40 mph winds chased by a line of thunderstorms blowing through the park, the spirits of KC/RC members, Troop 1306 volunteers, and area RC enthusiasts were not dampened. Partnering for the third year local Scout Troop 1306 provided eats that were deserving of a Michelin star, and over 30 pilots from across the Midwest, along with countless spectators, braved the storm until the blue sky came over the horizon. The temperatures stayed reasonable, and the flight line buzzed with the sounds of  kids going through flight training school before the asphalt had a chance to dry.  A huge THANK YOU to the great group of guys here at KC/RC for making this all happen.

A highlight of midday was the entertaining and informative airshow demonstrating the Top Gun skills of KC/RC pilots in a wide range of aircraft, including jets, classic era planes, warbirds, aerobatic aircraft, and the excitement of the Minor family control line competition demonstration. Visitors especially love the opportunity to get close and personal with aircraft during the Parade of Planes as flying was suspended, and everyone was invited on the runway to observe a lineup of planes, talk to the pilots, and vote on their favorites.  And at the end of the day, all club profits from the event were donated to Angel Flight Central, whose mission is to serve people in need by arranging charitable flights for health care or other humanitarian purposes. Check out the photo gallery for the story in pictures.

Mark your calendars now to join us on September 12, 2026, for our Annual Warbirds and Classic Era Fly-In.

2026 Fly and Swap

IMG_3560.jpeg

We had a great day at the 2026 KC/RC "Fly and Swap”. Lots of flying, buying, selling, and trading. A big shout out to the KCRC members that worked the tent and supported the sales of items recently donated to the club which allowed us to raise additional money for club projects and field improvements. The highlight of the day was setting around and having great conversations with fellow modelers from around the Kansas City metro area, including members from Jayhawk Model Masters, RC Barnstormers at Hillsdale Lake, Springfield RC Club Blacksheep Squadron, Cameron Dragonflies, RC Sport Flyers at Longview Lake, and everyone else that spent the day with us. The Scouts parent team did a great job providing breakfast and lunch while the kids were at camp, and we had a great turnout of area modelers and spectators filling the bleachers. Compared to the weather in late June, no one complained about the temperature. Our annual Swap N Shop will be held in February at John Knox Pavilion in Lee’s Summit. Check out the Photo Gallery.  And enjoy the pictures shared by Jayhawk Model Masters on Facebook.

2026 Jets over Jacomo

IMG_2799.jpeg
Kansas City Radio Control Association celebrated a day of flying and modeler fellowship with the “2026 Jets over Jacomo” held at the Charles Reed III Memorial Flying Field in Lee’s Summit, Mo. Pilots from Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Florida filled the skies with the sounds and smells of turbine and EDF jets of all sizes. Check out the photos.
A heartfelt memorial to KC/RC member and friend, the late Tom Cook, was held throughout the day as Tom’s sons set up a great display that showcased his personal and professional contributions to the radio control hobby, including accomplishments as an owner-operator of Jet Model Products that served jet model enthusiasts around the world and his design and innovation of the DynaMax ducted fan system, many of which are in use to this day. Tom was a Competitor, Pattern Flyer, Pylon racer, 1980 KC/RC Club President, Multi-Nationals and Scale Masters Champion, a true friend to the hobby.
Tom’s family and friends joined together for the sharing of stories and a generous donation was made to KC/RC in honor of Tom. A giant of the model aircraft world, he was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 2023. Tom will be missed.

2026 Summer Build and Fly Flight School

IMG_2983.jpeg

No better way to spend a summer evening than at Charles Reed III Memorial Flying Field in Fleming Park, sharing the excitement of aviation with a new generation of flyers, builders, designers, engineers…the list is endless where these kids will go.
This group of amazing fledgling pilots is from the EAA 91—KC/RC Young Eagles Build and Fly program in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Words can’t tell the story as well as pictures, so scroll through the pictures. Big shoutout to Susan, Phil, Jimmy, and so many other KC/RC members who keep this program alive and soaring.
